Totally agree, I brought debt into our marriage but thankfully with hardwork from both hubby and I are debt free including students loans, car loans, credit card debt and except mortgage. We are working on that too. Thank you for sharing and I wished I knew all this before but I will say it never too late to make things right. Just work on pay off your debt, one debt at a time. Also we are using the Dave Ramsey baby steps. ❤️❤️

How were you able to engage in side hustles during your PhD in New York? I ask because I’m an international student in the US, but my F1 immigration status precludes me from being able to work outside of the university. Do you have any tips for students who graduate and attain OPT status? Thanks so much for your awesome content! ?

Interest rates on mortgages in Kenya are insane. A rate of 14% is normal and actually on the lower end of the scale. If you take out a mortgage, the total interest alone over the payment period will be enough to buy a second house not too dissimilar from the one you took out a mortgage in the first place.
Consequently, most homes in Kenya (over 90%) are paid for in cash or through specific developer-based payment schemes.
How do people get the cash (yes, for even those gorgeous homes in Gigiri), from other sources of passive income e.g. pre-existing lower cost real estate purchased as investments and then rented out, money accumulated in investment accounts over a certain period of time etc.

Very informative. I have learnt a lot. Only caveat though is many of these tips sadly don’t apply in certain countries.

Congratulations Dr. Ijeoma Kola. On account of mortgage & debt, folk in the 254 might not understand debt and the whole owing dynamic!
With regards to contextual relevance, Kenyans operate on the premise of saving until they can afford whatever it is they you need and then they pay it off, so credit history and mortgage payments are foreign jargon to them. Folk pay their stuff off!
But I’m glad that you are sharing this for your diaspora audience who really need to understand the perils of the enticing and entrapping nature of debt.
Love you girl! And proud of you! Keep the good work. You rock!
